Adults, teens and children all have something to look forward to next year: 116 days off.
According to a report by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, those following a normal five-day work week, will have 116 days off in 2011, counting all national holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Only three holidays ― Christmas, New Year’s Day and a day from Chuseok ― fall Saturday or Sunday next year. In 2010, six national holidays overlapped with the weekend.
For many in the rat race looking forward to long weekends, this Lunar New Year’s Day falls on a Thursday, giving people a five-day weekend. The fall harvest festival, Chuseok, from Sept. 10 to 12, creates a four-day weekend.
Starting in June, weekenders will be busy planning for their three-day weekends as there is one every other month. Memorial Day on June 6, Liberation Day on Aug. 15 and National Foundation Day on Oct. 3, all land on a Monday.
Independence Movement Day on March 1 and Children’s Day on May 5 fall on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.
