Stuff Waygooks Like #1 - Kimbap (김밥)

Kimbap a.k.a. Gimbap a.k.a. 김밥 might be the most popular Korean food amongst waygooks living in Korea.  I do not mean popular as in "Hey, guys!  Tonight we gotta go out for some kimbap and then hit up the clubs!" but I mean most frequently eaten.  Kimbap is the closest native Korean equivalent of Western fast food and it is everywhere.

Popular franchise chains that specialize in kimbap are Gimbap Heaven (김밥천국), Gimbap Land (김밥나라), Gimgane (김家네), Gimbap and Spaghetti (김밥과 스파게티).  The stores usually look something like this.

Kimbap is steamed rice with various other ingredients rolled in a dried layer of seaweed.  Kimbap is commonly eaten by Koreans as a light lunch or reserved for picnics and outdoor events.  Once rolled, it is wrapped in tinfoil and can stay fresh and good to eat for about a day.  It can be reheated, or eaten at room temperature.

Waygooks love it because it is cheap and portable.  A standard ten inch roll of kimbap can cost less one US dollar and depending on what additional special ingredients you want added, will cost no more than three US dollars for a roll.

The types of kimbap vary greatly and common ingredients in different kinds can include tuna, fish cakes, crab meat, eggs, beef, cucumbers, spinach, carrots, pickled radish, brown rice, sweet rice, black rice, cheese, cooked squid, kimchi, and more.

For waygooks who are picky eaters, kimbap is one of the first things they discover they like to eat in Korea.  This leads them to try and remember a way to find these places usually before they can even read the Korean script.  ROKetship captured perfectly the humor of this commonplace situation:
If you want to see a cute Korea girl explain what kimbap is some more, aeriskitchen made a video to explain how to make some kimbap.

dont be fooled though, in terms of health and calories, kimbap is terrible and should be avoided unless you either exercise a lot or hope to get fat. a roll of tuna kimbap has roughly 2000 calories thanks to the white rice with its added sugar and vinegar; the mayonnaise; the carrots and other veggies sauteed in oil; the cheap ham; the egg; and the artificially yellow radish which has been pickled in highly sugared food coloring; and topping it all off is the slathering of sesame oil on the outside.

2000?

How do you get 2000?
Just a wild guess?
Yes, too much white rice, oil, etc., but you may as well say it is 2 billion calories.

told to me by a Korean who counted such matters years ago and reinforced by two Hapkido masters who told me to stay away from the stuff and eat bibimbap instead.

the point is though, it way more than two Snickers bars.

LOL - 2,000 calories!? Wow, was the kimbap the length and width of your leg? Kimbap is definitely not the healthiest thing to eat, but I don't think it warrants a health warning.

The difference between kimbap and bibimbap ingredients/nutrition wise - sugar, perhaps some vinegar.

ugh. tuna kimbap, yes 2,000.

you've forgotten the oil all the veggies are fried in, the fact that its all white rice, not brown or barely, the mayonnaiseㅡain't no mayo in bibimbap. they don't do tuna in water here, so that some more oil for ya and it ain't canola either, it's the cheapest most fattening oil. y'all forget that they take a brush after the kimbap is rolled and slather it down with sesame oil. mmmm, more oil.

the moo has been pickled in sugar and dyed yellow. no moo in bibimbap either. if you're lucky some places won't let you part without some SPAB (fake crab) with your tuna and mayo. go read the calories on that package.

the difference betweent kimbap and bibimbap incredients wise and nutrition wise is actually pretty vast.

only a FOB looks around and calls them same.

I have a hard time believing that a single roll of tuna kimbap has 2000 calories. A Big Mac, large fries, and a large Coke from McDonalds totals 1330 calories. (550,500,280 calories, respectively) In fact, if you search for 참치김밥칼로리 (tuna kimbap calories) you will see that most estimates come in under 600 calories. (560-600 seems to be the norm) That's quite a bit, but not nearly 2000. I'd like to see your full breakdown of calories or a webpage that explains where that number comes from. I can't believe that 4 Big Macs are only 200 calories more than a single roll of kimbap.

There are different kimbap you can get/make that is less than 2,000 calories. Also you can choose what kind of oil and how much.

It is healthy if you skip the meat and make it all veggie. Also it depends on what kind of meat you are using in the kimbap roll. You can make it yourself and use brown rice instead or something else. But this is less MSG, less added sodium, and less junk in general.

Gimbaps are pretty high in calories and certainly more than bibimbap, but 2000 is ludicrous. Maybe 1200 tops

three years on and the FOB stupidity in this thread continues to amaze. but i'll bite on the McDonald's example. 1330 calories, now add the mayo, the SPAB, the unnaturally yellow radish, etc. it all stacks and massively so for calories. if you wanna get fat, eat tuna kimbap. if you wanna work out and not see weight loss, eat any kimbap. it's junk food with junk food results.

It's sad when someone can't admit they are wrong.

Just as a fact check:

Even the most generous, large kimpbap roll is less than 1 lb.
Rice is more than half of that weight, but to make it simple, let's say 8 oz rice (200 calories)
Even if we assume the rest of the 8oz is ALL MAYO (1500 calories), you still don't get to 2000 per roll. I mean, this would be a massive roll of kimbap with 50% rice, and 50% mayo, and you still not at 2000.

Now, you keep mentioning the sugar content. Let's say half of the weight of the mayo is actually sugar. 4 oz of high fructose corn syrup (liquid sugar, more condensed than white sugar) is only 600 calories. This hurts your case.

Shall I keep going?
